Ian - that's shocking behaviour!

Anders - do you really have a windmill or are you taking the piss?

IJ - pleased to hear you're taking your husband responsibilities seriously!

It's not mine. I go there to do 'voluntary work' on the industrial heritage sites incl the mill in the photo & a few acres of woodland around it.

That's very interesting. Is your background in that field ?

No, some of my interests are though (like 'doing stuff' hands-on, learning new things, engineering & physics, and playing around with more impressive pieces of kit than I have at home) but I never did any of that professionally.  Some of the other guys there are retired engineers etc with great exciting experience and it's good to learn from them.

What I learn quite often is that as the lightest and most nimble if someone needs to go on a roof then it'll be me.

Re: All Quiet on the Jnet Front

No way would I be on a roof. Hate being UP. Had to go some scary places as an Ambulance driver but anything involving height ( up or down ) was not good.
Had someone knocked down by a train in Loanhead ( track runs under the main street and I don't think it's in use these days ) Crawled under a " live " diesel engine and lay keeping patient calm while they moved the engine! Wouldn't get away with all the health and safety nowadays.

Re: All Quiet on the Jnet Front

Besides the heavy engineering there's also a fair bit of woodland to manage which is also interesting, currently taking out lots of trees of various types. Chainsaws, falling trees... No fatalities (yet).

Re: All Quiet on the Jnet Front

Do you still have both legs/arms/hands? Hope you have the correct trousers when using a chain saw.

Re: All Quiet on the Jnet Front

Used to use my own over there without the appropriate gloves & trousers but was always ill at ease about it. I don't now, we take a much more safety-conscious approach. People knock health & safety concerns but imho they're nuts to. You can ignore h&s but at least do the thinking first and know what risks you're ignoring and what risk-avoiding actions would be possible. We also have an incline (from one of the early Robert Stephenson train lines) and maintain the footpath bridges over it. Plenty of scope for injury to innocent bystanders. Fear not Jim, I'm caution personified.

Re: All Quiet on the Jnet Front

Many people don't know about the chain saw trousers. They have a special lining that should the chain saw touch your leg the lining jams the saw stopping it from taking your leg off. Still get hurt but not nearly as bad as it could be so always wise to use them.
Safety glasses are also a must as wood chips fly.
H&S cost us millions every year but the EU don't enforce it abroad. Watched a site worker in Portugal on site wearing flip flops and shorts( no hard hat ) here companies insist on them and stick the extra cost onto the customer. We get ripped off all the time.
