Northern Lights

Saw them for the first time tonight. Incredible sight. Funny that they're even more vivid in photos than they are to the human eye, without any special filters or anything like that.

Don't know how to embed a photo but hopefully that will work if you click the link!

Re: Northern Lights

Beautiful, Forrest! What were they like for you with the naked eye?

Re: Northern Lights

A lot less vivid! The purple was like a very deep red / purple, but not bright at all, and you could see the faintest tinge of green / blue.

It's amazing what a difference the camera makes, but as I say, we didn't use any special filters or anything like that. I put "night mode" on, which I think increases the exposure time, but that's it.

Re: Northern Lights

I've seen them a few times since we've been in Lewis, but never in colour with the naked eye.

Wonder why we say 'naked' eye? 😊

Re: Northern Lights

I'm interested in etymology, but I can't find anything online about the original of the phrase, other than the suggestion that nothing is covering the eye.
