Afghanistan

Do you not think it occurs to the Taliban that if people are genuinely upping sticks and fleeing for their lives, leaving everything behind because they are scared they're going to be killed, that maybe, just maybe, they shouldn't be in charge?

So sad for the innocent civilians who seem to have enjoyed their lifestyle for the last two decades.  What's going to be left for the Taliban to govern if everyone else has left?  Will be interesting to see if the West take any responsibility for taking in the refugees - I can't see Priti Patel welcoming them in to England with open arms!

Re: Afghanistan

the Taliban may as well let those go who want to leave. It'd make the country easier to govern for them afterwards, they could then concentrate on doing what they want to do rather than dealing with opposition & the threat of rebellion instead.
Meanwhile a continuum of wise privileged western men announce what went wrong, what they should have done there, what might be done in the future, as they continue on the basis of imposing their will on other peoples' countries. But not saying that maybe that's what created the disaster. Even though they had the ability to see Russia do exactly the same before them....and fail just the same.
Is sending people with guns into someone else's country to force your preferred politics on them ever a good idea? Naw. Has it ever worked? Not that I can see. What if another country sent soldiers into the UK to force their politics on us cos they didn't like our laws and ways - would that go down well, would the UK say "yeah ok we'll forget our own views and have whatever you want"...naw so why think another country will react in any different way? Was there a problem in Afghanistan, certainly, and did it have to be dealt with, probably, but is marching into someone else's life with a gun the way to achieve lasting change & happiness? History suggests it's just pretty much a nailed-on failure that creates resistance when it's actually willing compliance you're looking to achieve.

Re: Afghanistan

Is there some new info/article that's prompted that HC? Haven't seen much on it in recent days.

Re: Afghanistan

Nothing in particular, Anders.  There was a piece of the radio this morning that just made me think how hard it would be to be a woman in Afghanistan just now.

Saw pictures on the news yesterday of a woman being beaten because whe didn't have on the appropriate dress, and hearing that only males have been allowed back at school just makes me despair..
