Have been told that I'll be working from home until the end of the year. . While that makes it much safer, it's tough working from home, especially as I like contact with others and am a sociable soul.
That date also happens to be when my contract comes to an end. Can't say I feel confident about finding employment at these times.

I thought the use of four letter words was banned on here.

It's the four letter word that pays the mortgage and the other bills, Jim.

Still not even able to work over here. Now over a year since my green card application was accepted; as a combination of covid/being one step up the ladder from a jihadi in the fuckwit president's eyes I'm no really any further forward. When I do get one, I'll step into a job market that's no been so utterly fucked since the 1920s, and because I'm an immigrant will be automatically pushed behind any US candidate.
Great fun!

Sorry to hear that IJ.
After Covid the US will find what we will find, so many businesses gone but people still need services. So others will just take their place (maybe slowly) but will do different things and will do the same things differently. With a bit of lateral thinking are there niches you could get into which practically don't exist now but there's a chance that could take off eventually, and aren't on the general job market's radar yet? Also what would you be prepared to do - here (so is it the same there?) there are jobs that locals are less interested in and "others" do, not just cleaning but the more civilized side of food production, delivery, small shops work. I don't mean eg just behind the counter in the example of wee shops & suppliers for wee shops but there's loads of other roles that go on to coordinate them all such as getting the right stock there, pushing new products, the structure of the places (not only the physical structure). Each role's a little industry in itself and each is interesting in its own way. If just as a fill-in thing if you want a fill-in thing?
I'd have thought that trading on your exotic accent would've helped with some jobs already, sorry it's not been the case.

We had to fill in a survey, and I said I had no desire to return to the office before Christmas. I had a wee bit of cabin fever at the start, but I've grown to enjoy it a bit. Really get what you mean about social contact, though. Good luck for the next stage - is there any chance of an extension to your contract?

I find the lack of social contact tough, although things will start getting a bit better next week as my schedule will be pretty much back to normal (have been twiddling my thumbs quite a bit), albeit it'll be done in my house rather than my workplace.
There's a very slight chance my contract might be extended, but I don't expect it will be.
I think the sector I work in will be one of the first to be pruned right back.

With a lot more people soon to find out that they're unemployed, a rise in the take-up of learning of all sorts is a fair possibility d'you think? As people look to develop some skills to make them more employable, or just to fill the time that they'll have a bit more of with something useful. Might not be as bad as you fear?
